This list consists of queer zine reviews from Factsheet Five #50 and #51.
These reviews also are in Queer Zine Explosion #10.  The listing was
compiled at the end of February, 1994, and includes zines received since
September, 1993.  This is not a complete list of queer zines -- it does
not include zines which have not published since before Sept. 1993.  For a
list of older zines, or additional material from the paper version (for
instance, a list of non-queer zine resources) send email to Larry-bob at
[e-mail].

There are also sections on APAs, video, and some announcements at the
end of the file.

Zines with a "*" at the beginning of the Descr field have new issues
and those with a "+" are the first review of the zine.  Zines without
either symbol were reviewed in Factsheet Five #50, and those with a
symbol were reviewed in Factsheet Five #51.  Confusing, yes.

%Descr:  +This is a publication of Students and Teens Opposing Psychiatric
Abuse. It is by young psychiatric survivors who have experienced first
hand incarceration in the mental health system. Sandra is
institutionalized after threatening suicide; resources, including the
National Center for Lesbian Rights, which wants to stop practices of
institutions trying to change people's sexual identities; abuse in
juvenile hall; a piece by Rosebud Denovo about being institutionalized at

Supplement, which features two gay male characters getting to know each

%Descr:  A series of poetry chapbooks, including "Day Naked," "X," "Fag,"
"Rialto," Crying," "Down On All Fours,"and "I'm Not Finished Eating The
Moon." The first two are illustrated with Cocteau-esque drawings of men
having sex, and they also contain the most sexually overt poems; "Fag"
deals more with homophobia; "Rialto" ($3) with pictures of men in rural
settings, seems to be a memorial. "I'm Not Finished..." includes a poem
with the lines "Yeah I know racist fags/ They hate dykes too/ Because They
Hate/ Themselves more than/ Anybody."

%Descr:  This issue of the tabloid zine of anarchist politics, sexuality
and other fun is titled "Face the Threat." There's much stuff in here,
including a list of questions about privilege; a story about taking a shit
in a suspicious small town; how the government fucked shit up for the
underground press in the 60's; bike rider gripes; a guide to applying for
unemployment, g.a. and food stamps -- and, in a good example of the
variety of voices in this publication, another article about why
anarchists shouldn't take money from a government they don't believe in;
stuff about violence; a visit to be tested for HIV antibodies; history of
the diggers (the ones in the 1600's); faking orgasms; going to queer

an official apologizes for a package being opened that was being sent to a
gay/lesbian bookstore; confidentiality and secrecy about HIV status; a
queer youth perspective on panhandling; an interview with filmmaker Isaac

%Title:  Anonymous Boy Collection   Issue 2
%Descr:  +Anonymous Boy's drawings were one of the features of the classic
queer zine JDs. He's still drawing, and this is a collection of drawings
of punk boys getting it on. The archetypal Anonymous Boy drawing is of a
couple of boys cumming under a wall full of punk posters, and there's
several of those drawings in this collection, as well as pictures of guys
meeting at clubs, guys at a demonstration, and making out in the surf.

%Descr:  Rick Castro describes this zine of photos as the world's first
"Coffeetable Zine." Most of the photos are of guys trussed up like the
prey of a libidinous spider. A couple pages feature Peter Berlin, and
there's a two-page photo of a person mummified in duct tape. (Imagine the
feeling of it being yanked off! Youch!) Also notable are the tied-up
nipples on the pages entitles "Nine Inch Nipples." There's also a letter
from a prisoner about witnessing a gang rape, and a story about kids who
abuse nerve gas and laxatives and wear colostomy bags. If you're into
bondage, this could fuel weeks of fantasy.

that is, anal sex. Fainlight is especially interesting -- in a section
about public sex, he writes, "Beneath a dripping cistern, eyes/ Dart like

%Descr:  If you look at any mainstream gay porno magazine, the guys in it
are going to be under 30, hairless, white, thin gym queens. The men in
this magazine are the opposite of that in nearly all aspects besides race.
And they reflect reality much more than the never-never-land of mainstream
gay porn. There are three sets of solo photos, and one pictorial of two
men, one of them grizzled and wearing a hardhat and tool belt. There's
also an article on gaining weight; a hot story about two men's reunion in
their childhood clubhouse; chubby men in the media; plus lots of contact
ads, and a Bear and Girth & Mirth club directory.

%Descr:  This is supposedly the memorial issue of BOS; according to
newspaper clippings reprinted here, TEG died in a car fire. There's an
article by Nathan Lee about TEG; an unfinished essay by TEG; an interview
with TEG; reactions to TEG's death (some of these are clearly cases of
putting words in people's mouths); a comic by Rob Kirby about TEG that's
probably the best thing in the zine; AIDS and anti-sex legislation; a call
to queers to stop trying to appropriate concepts of sexuality from other
cultures; an open letter to Patrick Scully, in which TEG calls him an
exhibitionist (sounds like the pot calling the kettle black); notes about
TEG's ex-boyfriends; old letters from Bruce La Bruce; a boy's guide of
tearoom sex. If TEG's really dead, this is a nice tribute, but if he's
not, it's kind of self-indulgent.

%Descr:  This monthly publication caters primarily to heterosexual male
crossdressers, though it may be of interest to other transgender people.
It certainly comes out frequently enough, and has enough text, to keep you
busy reading all year. Features in this issue include an article about
science fiction conventions; four television TV moments (is this photo of
Reuben Kincaid as a fairy godmother for real?!?); a reaction to a nasty
letter to the N. Y. Times about people who were in "Paris is Burning".
Plus columns with tips on make-up and passing as a woman, and one written
by the wife of a crossdresser.

APAs

An APA (Amateur Press Association) is a publication where all contributors
send multiple copies of their submission to an coordinator, who collates
the whole thing and sends it out to all participants. Participants pay for
postage. APAs frequently are science fiction related. Some APAs have a
limit on the number of active members, so you may have to go on a waiting
list. APAs can be like a community of friends, a non-threatening way to
share your creativity.

-- The 1993 New Moon Directory is a listing of over 250 APAs on nearly

-- Will there be a Spew 4? People have been asking, but nobody has stepped
forward to organize such a queer zine convention. Chris Wilde of Abrupt
